The state has recorded consistent growth in milk production over the past three years, as the government intensifies efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in the dairy sector.
Animal Resources Development Minister Sudhangshu Das shared this information in the State Assembly while replying in writing to queries from MLAs Nirmal Biswas and Sudip Roy Barman.
As per official data, milk production stood at 230,115 metric tons in 2022–23. It increased to 247,305 metric tons in 2023–24 and further climbed to 263,690 metric tons in 2024–25. Despite this upward trend, the state’s current milk requirement is estimated at 303,480 metric tons.
To narrow this gap, the government has introduced multiple initiatives focused on improving livestock productivity and supporting farmers. Key measures include expanding artificial insemination services, improving animal nutrition, and offering training to workers associated with breeding programs.
A major push is being given under the Chief Minister’s Improved Cattle Project, where sex-sorted semen is used to ensure a higher number of female calves, ultimately boosting milk output. Genetic improvement of cattle through the use of high-quality breeding material is also being emphasized.
Nutrition programs are another important component. Under the Chief Minister’s Animal Resources Development Yojana, about 8,000 calves are receiving balanced feed this financial year. Farmers are also being encouraged to grow green fodder and adopt better feeding practices.
The minister added that unemployed youth involved in artificial insemination services are receiving incentives linked to calf births, along with regular skill development training. New candidates are also being trained to expand the workforce.
In addition, “Gokul Gram” centers are being set up to promote improved cattle rearing, while crossbred, high-yielding calves are distributed among livestock farmers. To motivate dairy producers, the government organizes calf rallies and milk production competitions, rewarding top performers.
With these combined efforts, the state government aims to significantly enhance milk production and move closer to achieving dairy self-reliance in the near future.
