In a significant step to ease mounting traffic congestion within Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) limits, the Transport Department, in coordination with the Traffic Police, has revised its earlier guidelines on autorickshaw movement.
The decision came after extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including labor organizations and syndicates.
A crucial review meeting was held today at the state Secretariat under the chairmanship of Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury. Senior officials from the Transport Department, Security Administration, Traffic Police, and representatives of labor unions participated in the deliberations.
Speaking to reporters, Transport Department sources revealed key changes in the movement regulations autos from Narsingarh, Bamutia, Gandhigram, and Mohanpur (Mohanpur Subdivision) will now be allowed to carry passengers up to the Circuit House in Agartala. However, these autos will not be allowed to stop or wait near the Gandhi statue roundabout to avoid traffic bottlenecks. Autos from Jirania, Khayerpur, and Ranirbazar (Jirania Subdivision) can drop passengers either at Chandrapur Bus Stand or the Old Jail premises, depending on preferences expressed by labor unions. Autos from Bishalgarh, Sekerkot, and Amtali must drop passengers at Nagerjala Motor Stand and return to their respective locations thereafter.
In a special provision, students from rural areas attending coaching classes in Agartala may use reserved autos to enter the city. However, these autos are not permitted to ferry other passengers within the city limits.
The earlier directive to mark the front portion of autos operating within AMC in pink will continue. Autos from other subdivisions will maintain their current color schemes.
Transport Minister Chowdhury urged auto owners to comply with the revised rules without delay.
He further warned that violations would invite strict monitoring and legal action.
