Tripura Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury has praised Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury for their compassionate gesture towards a bereaved family whose two children drowned in a water-filled construction pit.

At the same time, he has urged the state government to extend similar support and initiate investigations into two other tragic incidents involving the deaths of children.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, Chaudhury—who also serves as the CPIM state committee secretary—commended Dr. Saha for personally visiting the family of Prasenjit Debnath (11) and Priyanka Debnath (7), who drowned on May 17 in Chanmari, an Agartala suburb. The siblings died after falling into a water-logged hole dug by a promoter for a building construction project.

"I must appreciate that despite your busy schedule, you visited the grieving parents and offered not just condolences but also financial support. This humane gesture, though unable to compensate for their irreparable loss, will certainly help them gain strength to cope with the tragedy," Chaudhury wrote.

The LoP also called for an independent inquiry into the incident by a team of experts to ensure accountability and justice.

Further in his letter, Chaudhury drew the Chief Minister's attention to two other child death cases that he said deserve urgent attention. On June 28, 2024, two girls drowned in the Mohanpur sub-division of West Tripura district. According to Chaudhury, their families have not received any form of government assistance so far, a situation he described as "inhumane and painful."

The third case he highlighted involved the death of a nine-year-old girl from Nalsing Sardar Para in Kaladhepa ADC Village under Sabroom sub-division of South Tripura. The child went missing on May 20, 2025, and was found dead in a nearby forest the following day. The LoP stated that residents and the child’s family strongly suspect foul play and are demanding a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrator(s) to justice.

"The guardians and concerned citizens are rightfully seeking a comprehensive probe into this brutal incident so that justice is delivered and the guilty are punished," he added.

Chaudhury concluded by urging the Chief Minister to ensure prompt and adequate financial, moral, and legal support for the families affected by all three incidents. "Though delayed in the case of the Mohanpur tragedy, I hope the issues raised will receive your immediate attention," he said.
