Amid rising concern over alleged deteriorating law and order in Tripura, the Pradesh Congress Committee has launched a scathing attack on the state government, citing a spate of heinous crimes and accusing the ruling party of shielding criminals linked to it.
In a press statement TPCC Spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty said citing figures revealed by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha in the last budget session of the Assembly, highlighted that 144 women were raped and 31 women murdered in Tripura over the past year.
The party further pointed to Home Department data from June that recorded seven murders, 31 unnatural deaths, 31 rapes or gang rapes, 37 robberies, and other violent crimes, describing the situation as “alarming and unacceptable.”
He also cited specific incidents from July, including the gang-rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl in Jirania, the killing of two housewives in Bamutia, and a brutal attack in Agartala where a housewife’s tongue was reportedly severed. The statement also referred to politically motivated violence, including mass beatings allegedly carried out by BJP mandal leaders in Shalbagan, and the raid and vandalism of a minority Congress worker’s shop in Sonamura.
Chakraborty also accused the BJP-led government of failing to uphold basic law and order, despite public claims by top leaders.
“The Chief Minister and senior police officials often claim Tripura is among the leading states in law and order. But the ground reality is starkly different,” the statement said.
The party also raised concerns about the growing drug menace in the state. While Chief Minister Dr. Saha recently admitted that “a section of influential people and their relatives” were involved in the drug trade, the Congress alleged that no major drug trafficker has been arrested so far.
“Instead, only small-time carriers—mostly linked to the ruling party—are being arrested occasionally,” it said.
“In their desperation to hide today’s failures, government ministers and BJP leaders are invoking incidents from the past. But people of Tripura can clearly see what is happening around them,” the statement said.
Demanding urgent intervention, the Congress urged the state government and police administration to rise above partisan interests and act strictly against those involved in criminal activities, regardless of their political affiliations.
“We condemn the collapse in law and order and call on the government to ensure justice, safety, and accountability for all citizens,” the statement concluded.
