The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) has kicked off its campaign for the upcoming Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections on April 12, focusing on tribal empowerment and promising to tackle long-standing deprivations.
TPCC President Asish Kumar Saha highlighted the political stakes of the elections and framed them as a test of the Congress’s relevance in tribal politics.
Addressing the media, Saha said, “This year’s ADC elections are crucial for the Pradesh Congress. We are contesting as part of a strategic three-party alliance with the Tripura People's Party and Jan Manch. Congress candidates will contest 27 of the 28 seats, signaling our dominant role in shaping governance in the tribal areas.”
Saha also criticized the current state of tribal governance, noting that despite the ADC coming under the Sixth Schedule during the tenure of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, tribal communities continue to face systemic deprivations. “After more than four decades, the tribal people are still denied their full rights. Our alliance candidates will work to liberate them from these long-standing hardships and establish transparent, accountable governance,” he asserted.
The TPCC’s campaign comes ahead of the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election on April 9, signaling a broader strategy to consolidate support in both tribal and non-tribal constituencies. With this electoral push, the Congress aims to reaffirm its political foothold in Tripura’s tribal regions and present itself as the party capable of delivering both rights and governance reforms.
