On the occasion of World Blood Donor Day 2025, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Satuday called for a state-wide mass awareness drive to promote voluntary blood donation, describing it as both a noble deed and a social responsibility.
Addressing a gathering at Pragna Bhawan in Agartala, Dr. Saha paid tribute to Karl Landsteiner, the legendary scientist whose discovery of blood groups revolutionized transfusion medicine. "On his birth anniversary, we celebrate the spirit of selflessness embodied by blood donors," he said.
Highlighting the recurring challenges faced by blood banks in Tripura, especially during election periods, the Chief Minister remarked, “Shortages often arise when we need blood the most. If the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘One Nation, One Election’ is implemented, it could help address these gaps by streamlining the process and reducing disruptions.”
Dr. Saha, who also holds the Health portfolio, recounted the acute blood crisis experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic and urged citizens to donate blood regularly. “Just one unit of blood can save up to three lives. The people of Tripura have always risen to the occasion whenever the call has gone out,” he added.
Emphasizing the health benefits of regular blood donation, Dr. Saha noted, “It reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases by 33%. Men can donate every three months and women every four months. The process takes just a few minutes, but its impact lasts a lifetime.”
He further informed that nearly 15% of the state's population has a negative blood type, which necessitates maintaining reserves. “We must ensure at least two units of blood are available for every surgery. But above all, awareness is key—more awareness means more donors,” he asserted.
As part of the day's program, Dr. Saha launched ‘Tripura Raktakosh’, the official web portal of the Tripura Blood Transfusion Council, aimed at facilitating donor-patient connections. He also released a blood donation calendar, unveiled the cover of the health department's newsletter ‘Swasthya Samachar’, and felicitated several voluntary blood donors for their contributions.
