Political temperatures soared in Agartala on Monday after Congress youth leader Shahjahan Islam allegedly made a series of objectionable comments against Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha and Tripura Police during a Facebook live broadcast.

The remarks, streamed from Islam’s personal Facebook page, also targeted the president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Minority Front, further fueling tensions.

In response, the Bharatiya Janata Party organized a massive protest procession in Agartala on Monday afternoon. The demonstration, which began from the BJP’s Sadar district office, moved along the main highway, traversing various parts of the city and drawing significant public attention.

Speaking to reporters, BJP Sadar District President Asim Bhattacharya strongly condemned Shahjahan Islam’s remarks, accusing him of attempting to disrupt the state’s peace and communal harmony.

“A civilized and healthy society cannot tolerate the kind of derogatory language used against the Chief Minister. Such attempts to incite unrest will not be accepted,” Bhattacharya said.

Adding to the political outcry, members of the BJP Minority Front submitted a deputation at the West Agartala Police Station demanding immediate action against Islam.

The delegation handed over a memorandum to the officer-in-charge, pressing for his arrest on grounds of inciting communal disharmony and maligning public officials.

As a result of the incident, political circles across the state remained heated throughout the day, with both parties holding firm to their positions.

While the BJP has demanded legal action against Islam, the Congress is yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

Police authorities have confirmed receipt of the complaint and stated that appropriate legal steps will be taken after reviewing the content of the Facebook live.
