A delegation of the Tipra Motha Party, led by its founder and chairman Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on Wednesday met the Election Commission of India (ECI) in New Delhi pressing for the implementation of a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Tripura to curb the rising issue of illegal migration.
The delegation submitted a memorandum to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, highlighting concerns over the unchecked influx of illegal immigrants and its potential impact on the state’s demographic balance and national security.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Pradyot said, “Just as the ECI has initiated a Special Intensive Revision in Bihar, we have demanded the same for Tripura. Illegal migration is not just a Tripura issue — it is a threat to the entire Northeast. If this continues, soon we may be left pleading for our identity and existence.”
He added that the party's appeal to the ECI was clear: detect, delete, and deport illegal immigrants who have entered Tripura from Bangladesh.
“We cannot give away a single inch of our land. We have every right to protect our homeland,” he asserted.
Responding to political undercurrents, Pradyot clarified that Tipra Motha’s stance is independent of national parties. “If Congress or BJP wish to speak to the ECI, that’s their prerogative. But as Tipra Motha leaders, we speak for our indigenous people and for our state. We don’t need anyone’s permission to raise our voice.”
He further warned that the historical mistakes of the 1950s through the 1990s must not be repeated in 2025 — neither socially nor politically.
“If necessary, we are prepared to approach the Supreme Court. But we will not allow Tripura to become a dumping ground for illegal immigrants,” he said.
According to Pradyot, the ECI has assured the delegation that a nationwide rollout of the Special Intensive Revision — similar to the exercise in Bihar — is on the agenda, and Tripura will also be included.
