Tension gripped Kubjhar village under Kailashahar sub-division in Tripura’s Unakoti district on Saturday after a protest rally against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill turned violent, leading to a confrontation between demonstrators and security personnel. Authorities have since brought the situation under control.

According to officials, over a hundred members of the minority Muslim community gathered in Kubjhar—located near the Bangladesh border—to protest the proposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, demanding its immediate withdrawal. The rally was reportedly led by MD Badrujaman, President of the Kailashahar District Committee.

DIG (Northern Range) Rati Ranjan Debnath said that the protest began peacefully but took an unexpected turn when demonstrators, who were not authorized to carry out a rally, began marching toward Kailashahar town.

“They were expected to return after a meeting. However, the crowd suddenly began moving toward Kailashahar. We had set up barricades to prevent any escalation. When the rally reached the Murar Dukan area, a section of youth clashed with security personnel, attempting to break through the barricades. Soon after, stones were hurled at the police, resulting in injuries to several personnel,” Debnath said.

He added that forces responded promptly to disperse the crowd and restore order.

Meanwhile, police sources confirmed that additional security personnel have been deployed across the Kailashahar sub-division to prevent any further unrest. The situation, they said, remains stable and under close watch.
