TIPRA Motha moves SEC over allegedly doctored video; seeks action

The TIPRA Motha Party has approached the Tripura State Election Commission (SEC) seeking action over an allegedly doctored video being circulated on social media during the ongoing Village Council elections.

The complaint was submitted on behalf of TIPRA Motha General Secretary and Minister of State Brishaketu Debbarma by workers associated with Youth Tipra Federation president and District Council member Suraj Debbarma.

In the complaint, Debbarma alleged that footage from a peaceful TIPRA Motha election campaign march had been digitally combined with provocative audio from an unrelated protest programme. The altered video, he claimed, was being circulated to create the impression that objectionable slogans targeting particular communities were raised during a TIPRA Motha event.

The party maintained that no such slogans were raised at any of its marches, rallies, meetings or campaign programmes. It alleged that the circulation of the manipulated footage was intended to defame the party, mislead voters and create communal tension during the election period.

The complaint also referred to TIPRA Motha’s stated principle of “Thansa”, or unity among communities in Tripura, under the leadership of party founder Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma.

The party urged the SEC to identify those allegedly involved in producing and circulating the video and coordinate with police and cybercrime authorities to take appropriate legal action.

It also sought removal or blocking of the allegedly manipulated content and requested a public warning against the circulation of fake or misleading media during the elections.

According to the complaint, the party has submitted original campaign footage, the source audio and links to the social media posts as evidence.
