Tension gripped the Abhoynagar area on Sunday after eviction notices were issued to residents living along the banks of the Kata Khal canal as part of a Smart City project. Protesters blocked the GB Abhoynagar Road near the Abhoynagar Bridge, demanding rehabilitation before any eviction takes place.
According to reports, several families who have been residing along the canal for years have received two consecutive notices from the administration asking them to vacate the land. The eviction drive is being initiated by the sub-divisional administration to facilitate the renovation of the canal under the Agartala Municipal Corporation’s development plan.
Residents alleged that announcements were made via loudspeakers on Friday, instructing them to vacate the area immediately. However, they claim that no alternative rehabilitation arrangements have been provided so far, leaving them in deep uncertainty.
Many affected families said they rely on small loans from microfinance institutions to sustain their livelihoods and support their children’s education. Some residents work as domestic helpers and daily wage earners. The sudden eviction threat, they said, has pushed them into a severe crisis.
Protesters questioned where they would go without proper resettlement and expressed strong resentment against the administration. They vowed not to vacate their homes until a clear rehabilitation plan is put in place. Some even warned they would resist the eviction at any cost.
Authorities intervened at the site to bring the situation under control, and efforts are reportedly ongoing to defuse tensions.
The situation remains tense as residents continue to demand immediate assurances regarding their rehabilitation.
