A tragic incident that claimed the lives of two siblings has sparked outrage, with political leaders demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to their drowning in an open construction pit.

Leader of Opposition Jitendra Choudhury and former BJP MLA Dr. Dilip Das on Monday visited the site of the incident and held the construction company and government departments responsible for the tragedy.

Dr. Dilip Das, who led a delegation to the site in the Barjala Assembly constituency, said local residents informed them about how the children fell into the pit, which had been left uncovered.

He alleged gross negligence on the part of the construction company.

"From the site engineer to the contractor—everyone involved in the construction has fled. They are directly responsible for the loss of these young lives," said Dr. Das. "Moreover, the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) cannot escape responsibility. This incident could have been prevented with proper supervision."

Dr. Das claimed that even attempts to reach the AMC assistant manager went unanswered. He also alleged that the construction company was using hooklines without obtaining the necessary permissions.

“The Electricity Corporation, AMC, and the Water Resources Department must all be held accountable. There appears to be no regard for human life. Compensation must be given to the bereaved family, but more importantly, strict action is needed so this never happens again,” he added.

Later in the day, CPI(M) leader and State Opposition Leader Jitendra Choudhury also visited the site, accompanied by local MLA Sudip Sarkar, former MP Shankar Prasad Dutta, and other CPI(M) leaders.

Calling the incident "deeply tragic," Choudhury demanded immediate intervention from the administration.

“The administration must conduct a proper investigation and ensure accountability. Leaving a pit used for piling work open is nothing short of criminal negligence. An innocent family is now paying the price,” Choudhury told reporters.

Local residents also joined the leaders in demanding stringent action against the construction firm and stronger safety oversight on all civic projects.
