Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Tuesday criticised the previous Left Front government for allegedly failing to recognise and honour the significant contributions of the Manikya dynasty and Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya to the development of Tripura.
Dr. Saha made the remarks after paying floral tribute to Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur at his statue at Zero Point in Agartala.
The Chief Minister said that the history and contributions of the royal period, which should have been known to every citizen, were deliberately kept away from the people. He alleged that adequate efforts were not made to highlight the role and achievements of the Manikya dynasty in Tripura’s history and development.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly emphasised, ‘Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi’. Those who have contributed to the development of our country and our society must be recognised and remembered. In particular, the Manikya dynasty, which made significant contributions to Tripura, must be given its rightful place in our history,” Dr. Saha said.
He also highlighted Maharaja Bir Bikram’s contribution towards strengthening social harmony and unity between tribal and non-tribal communities.
“During the reign of Maharaja Bir Bikram, we witnessed close coordination, harmony and a strong bond between tribal and non-tribal communities. His vision was one of unity, coexistence and development,” he said.
Dr. Saha further said Maharaja Bir Bikram’s extensive travels to different countries broadened his outlook and influenced his vision for the modernisation of Tripura. He pointed to the Maharaja’s contribution to civic administration, including the establishment of one of the oldest municipal institutions in Agartala, besides several initiatives aimed at the development of the state.
The Chief Minister said that the legacy of the Manikya dynasty and Maharaja Bir Bikram must not be allowed to fade from public memory.
“Intentionally, the contributions and legacy of the Manikya dynasty and Maharaja Bir Bikram were not given the recognition and prominence they deserved by the previous government. Even today, they do not speak adequately about these remarkable contributions. However, our government has taken sincere steps to restore their rightful place in the history of Tripura and accord them the respect and recognition they truly deserve,” he added.
