In the aftermath of the declaration of results for the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections on Friday, post-poll violence has been reported from several parts of the state, forcing over 200 BJP workers to leave their homes. Reports also suggest that around 50 houses, shops, and party offices were damaged or set ablaze.
On Saturday, Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Tinku Roy, along with BJP General Secretary Bipin Debbarma and Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, visited affected areas to meet party workers who are allegedly taking shelter after being attacked by supporters linked to the Tipra Motha party.
Speaking to the media in Khowai district, where a large number of displaced workers have taken refuge, Minister Roy said that several BJP functionaries—including booth presidents, Prastha Pramukhs, and polling agents—have been unable to return home due to security concerns. He noted that incidents of violence were reported from Krishnapur, Ramchandraghat, and Asarambari areas. “We have discussed the situation with local MLAs and police authorities, and steps are being taken to restore normalcy,” he said.
He further added that similar disturbances were reported from Sepahijala and West Tripura districts, with additional smaller incidents in parts of Khowai.
Minister Sushanta Chowdhury stated that following the electoral outcome in which Tipra Motha secured victory, attacks were carried out on BJP offices and the residence of party candidate Abhijit Debbarma in Madhupur.
He also mentioned that security has been tightened, with police deploying forces at sensitive locations. According to him, authorities used lathi charge and tear gas to disperse an unruly crowd the previous day.
Chowdhury added that Chief Minister Manik Saha has directed several ministers to visit affected regions and oversee the situation, while instructing police to take appropriate measures.
BJP General Secretary Bipin Debbarma alleged that the violence was carried out by Tipra Motha supporters, claiming that over 200 party workers have been displaced and multiple homes and party offices have been torched. He also said that police complaints have been filed regarding the incidents.
