A special NDPS court in North Tripura has delivered a significant verdict in a four-year-old drug trafficking case involving a large consignment of cannabis allegedly being transported from Tripura to Assam.

The court found accused Cezarul SK, a resident of Murshidabad district in West Bengal, guilty and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 1 lakh. In case of non-payment of the fine, he will have to serve an additional two months in jail.

According to case records, the incident dates back to November 15, 2022, when police were conducting routine vehicle checks at the Churaibari naka checkpoint under Churaibari police station. During the operation, officers intercepted a 12-wheeler goods truck bearing registration number WB59B3256, which was traveling from Tripura to Assam.

Two individuals were on board the vehicle, identified as driver Fulsad SK and co-driver Cezarul SK, both from Murshidabad, West Bengal. Police noted inconsistencies in their initial statements, which led to further interrogation. During questioning, the driver reportedly admitted that the vehicle was being used to transport illegal narcotics.

Acting on this information, police searched the truck and recovered 84 packets of cannabis hidden in multiple compartments, including under the driver’s seat and a specially designed concealed chamber in the roof. The total seizure amounted to 560 kilograms and 600 grams of cannabis.

Following the seizure, a case was registered under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Churaibari police station. After investigation, a charge sheet was filed and the matter proceeded in the Special NDPS Court of North Tripura.
