Police from the West Agartala Women's Police Station in Agartala have arrested a man accused of the brutal rape and assault of a minor girl in the city's western area.

The incident came to light after a complaint was filed by the victim's mother. The accused, identified as Shankar Das, a fish trader from Rajnagar area, was known to the family, with the girl reportedly addressing him as 'Dadu' (grandfather).

According to the mother's complaint, Das took advantage of the parents' absence and lured the minor girl into an empty room. There, he allegedly subjected her to a brutal assault. The complaint details that he severely beat her and even forced her to consume a poisonous pesticide.

Seeing the girl's condition deteriorating critically, the accused allegedly fled the scene. Local residents later rescued the girl in a serious state and first took her to IGM Hospital. Due to the gravity of her injuries, she was subsequently transferred to GB Pant Hospital for advanced treatment.

Medical reports indicate the minor has sustained multiple injury marks all over her body and her condition was stated to be critical. Following the incident, the girl's family filed a formal complaint with the police.

Upon receiving the complaint, police initiated an investigation. "We took up the case and began our investigation. Last night, late in the evening, the accused, Shankar, was arrested from the Sekerkote area," said Sheuli Das, the Officer-in-Charge of the West Women's Police Station.
