Tripura Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury today launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led state government, alleging a total breakdown of law and order and accusing Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha of failing to control the spiralling violence.
Chaurdhury's remarks came in the wake of an incident on Sunday night in the Masjid Patti area, where miscreants reportedly attacked the residence of Shahjahan Islam, a youth leader of the Congress party after he made derogatory comments against CM Dr Saha.
Speaking to reporters, Chaudhury condemned the attack, calling it a deliberate attempt to intimidate opposition voices. “Miscreants stormed the house of Shahjahan Islam, vandalized property, and assaulted family members. This wasn’t just an attack on a person—it was a personal attack aimed at the Chief Minister’s political opponents,” he said.
Senior Congress leaders, including MLA Sudip Roy Barman and Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha, rushed to the spot upon receiving the news.
Chaudhury alleged that an attempt was also made to attack the Congress leaders when they arrived at the scene.
“That incident was not only outrageous but utterly barbaric,” he added.
The veteran CPI(M) leader claimed that such incidents reflect the worsening law and order situation in the state. “There is no rule of law in Tripura. Personal attacks have become the new norm, and yet, the government turns a blind eye,” Chaudhury stated.
“If making personal attacks is a crime, why are BJP leaders repeatedly attacking opposition figures without facing consequences?” he questioned, accusing the ruling party of double standards.
“The BJP government has not only failed to maintain peace but is also trying to capitalize on terrorism to cling to power,” Chaudhury alleged, demanding immediate action against the culprits and restoration of democratic rights in the state.
