In a remarkable display of medical expertise and dedication, doctors at Agartala Government Medical College and GB Pant Hospital have saved the life of a critically ill seven-month-old baby girl, Adrija Debnath, who was battling acute kidney injury caused by a severe infection.
According to a press release issued by the Health Department, baby Adrija, daughter of Abhijit Debnath, was admitted to the Pediatric Department on May 13, 2025. She had been suffering from a high fever and bloody diarrhea for nearly a week. On arrival, her condition was found to be extremely serious — she had drastically reduced urine output, dark urine, facial swelling, refusal to feed, and extreme weakness.
Recognizing the urgency, the medical team swiftly moved her to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICO). Initial test results revealed critically high levels of urea (150 mg/dL) and creatinine (2.1 mg/dL), along with severe anemia (hemoglobin at 6 g/dL) and a low platelet count. These symptoms indicated Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a rare but potentially fatal condition that can result in acute kidney failure in children.
Despite prompt intervention, Adrija's condition worsened. Her kidneys stopped functioning altogether, with urea levels rising further and no urine output. Doctors advised peritoneal dialysis, but her family, facing financial constraints, opted to transfer her to a private hospital in Kolkata. There, the treatment was estimated to cost Rs 15 lakh—Rs 70,000 per night—which forced the lower-middle-class family to return to GB Pant Hospital.
She was readmitted on May 19 in a critical state. Her urea had surged to 295 mg/dL, creatinine to 6.3 mg/dL, and hemoglobin had dropped to a dangerously low 3.5 g/dL. Under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Srivas Das, the hospital immediately initiated emergency peritoneal dialysis and blood transfusions, with full consent from her parents.
Gradually, Adrija began to recover. By May 26, she was stable and transferred to the general pediatric ward. Her urea had dropped to 1 mg/dL, creatinine to 0.6 mg/dL, and hemoglobin had improved to 9.4 g/dL.
In a compassionate gesture, the entire cost of treatment was covered under the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK), sparing the family from the heavy financial burden.
The successful recovery of baby Adrija stands as a testament to the skill, commitment, and coordinated efforts of the healthcare professionals at AGMC-GBP Hospital.
