In a heartwarming example of the success of the National Child Health Program (Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram), five-year-old Mayank Debnath of Moharchhara Gram Panchayat under Teliamura Subdivisional Hospital of Khowai District has made a full recovery after undergoing a life-saving heart surgery—completely free of cost.
Mayank, son of Reshmi Das, had been suffering from respiratory complications since birth due to an undiagnosed heart condition. It was during a routine screening camp conducted by the National Child Health Program at Teliamura Sub-divisional Hospital on November 20, 2024, that doctors Dr. Alok Debnath and Dr. Shankhamitra Das detected a cardiac anomaly.
Upon further consultation, doctors recommended advanced treatment.
However, given the family's financial constraints, Reshmi Das was unable to pursue the costly medical procedures on her own.
Due to the provisions of the National Child Health Program, the child was assured complete financial support for advanced care.
Mayank was referred to IGM Hospital in Agartala, where an echocardiography test conducted on January 6, 2025, confirmed a serious heart issue.
Recognizing the urgency and complexity of the case, the medical team coordinated his transfer to Apollo Children's Hospital in Chennai.
On May 7, 2025, a successful heart surgery was performed by renowned pediatric cardiologist Dr. C. S. Muktakumaram. Following the operation, Mayank was monitored closely and discharged on May 11, 2025, in stable condition. He has since returned home to Tripura after a complete recovery.
Mayank’s mother expressed deep gratitude to the government and health officials. “My son got a new life because of the National Child Health Program. I will always be thankful to the doctors and health workers who supported us at every step,” she said.
The community in Teliamura has also extended appreciation to the doctors and staff of the National Child Health Program for their tireless efforts in ensuring no child is left behind due to lack of financial resources.
