The CPI(M) in Tripura has announced a series of protests and mass deputations focusing on alleged corruption, rising crimes against women, unemployment, and other public issues. The party also claimed that the SIR process is being misused to help the BJP remain in power.
Addressing a press conference after a two-day state committee meeting, CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, along with party general secretary M.A. Baby, said the party reviewed recent election results, including the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) polls and the Dharmanagar by-election.
He said that while Tipra Motha secured victory in the ADC elections and the BJP won the bypoll, the CPI(M) believes the results reflect political divisions rather than the true mandate of voters. He also criticized Tipra Motha, alleging it has not contributed effectively to tribal development.
The party welcomed the State Election Commission’s decision to conduct Village Committee elections following Supreme Court directions, noting that these polls were overdue since 2021.
Chaudhury further alleged that the SIR process is being used politically to benefit the ruling party, citing developments in other states as well. He said the CPI(M) would work to ensure people’s voting rights are protected and that they do not face hardship due to the process.
He added that economic distress is rising in villages, claiming that over two lakh people have left Tripura for work, while some are even crossing into Bangladesh for livelihood.
The CPI(M) announced that from early July it will submit mass deputations across government offices over these issues, including alleged departmental corruption and opposition to labour codes. From August 10, the party will intensify street protests focusing on crimes against women and other pressing concerns.
