Tensions escalated in Tripura as violence erupted in the Sepahijala district, where a BJP election office was reportedly torched and at least 10 party workers, including a candidate, were injured in separate incidents allegedly involving supporters of the Tipra Motha Party.

The BJP’s candidate from the Pekurjala Janmejoynagar constituency of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), Majee Debbarma, suffered head injuries during a routine door-to-door campaign. According to BJP leaders, a group of unruly individuals suddenly attacked Debbarma and his team, damaging vehicles and assaulting party workers.

Supria Das Datta, the Sepahijala Sabhadhipati from the BJP, claimed that those responsible were backed by the Tipra Motha Party. She asserted that as the influence of Tipra Motha wanes and more people shift their support toward the BJP, tensions have grown, culminating in the alleged violence.

In another development, Tripura Panchayat Minister Kishor Barman said nine BJP workers were hurt after miscreants, whom he said were associated with Tipra Motha, set fire to a BJP election office late last night in the Nalchar Assembly constituency, also in Sepahijala district.

According to Barman, workers had finished their campaign activities and returned home around 11 p.m. when they were alerted that their local party office had been burned. He accused the attackers of repeating tactics he said were seen during the 2023 Assembly elections, including burning flags and threatening BJP leaders.

“The names of those involved have been shared with us by local residents,” Barman stated, while emphasising that despite holding power, the BJP does not endorse violence. He said injured workers are receiving medical treatment and reiterated the party’s condemnation of the incidents.
