With the monsoon fast approaching, the Agartala Smart City Limited (ASCL) has accelerated efforts to revamp the city's road and drainage infrastructure.
Dr. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, CEO of ASCL, shared details of the ambitious initiative during an inspection of the ongoing work across various city zones.
The project, launched in February, covers the construction of 23 km of roads and 46 km of drainage lines. According to Dr. Shailesh, this marks a significant upgrade for the city, which previously suffered from inadequate and poorly designed drainage systems.
“In many parts of Agartala, there were no drains or only temporary kutcha drains. Some existing ones were constructed without scientific planning,” Dr. Shailesh said, stressing the urgent need for a complete overhaul.
As part of the transformation, roads that are currently lower than the drainage levels will be elevated to prevent flooding — a frequent issue during heavy rains.
The project is not limited to roads and drains. ASCL is also laying underground electric lines and water supply networks, a move aimed at improving both the functionality and appearance of the urban landscape.
Importantly, Dr. Shailesh confirmed that the entire upgrade is being carried out without any land acquisition, ensuring that the city's residents face minimal disruption.
“This initiative is central to our vision under the Smart City Mission — to build a more resilient, efficient, and people-friendly Agartala,” he added.
With a target to wrap up the work before the rains set in, ASCL is pushing for speedy, coordinated execution on the ground.
