National Herald Case: Tripura BJP chief accuses Sonia, Rahul Gandhi of misusing public funds

Tripura BJP president Rajib Bhattacharya launched a scathing attack on senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, accusing them of embezzling public funds under the guise of running the National Herald.

Leading a protest rally in Agartala on Friday, Bhattacharya said the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) chargesheet in the ₹2,000 crore money laundering case reveals the extent of corruption allegedly committed by the Congress leadership.

"The National Herald was established in 1937 as a voice of India’s freedom struggle. It is extremely unfortunate that the same institution has been turned into a vehicle of personal gain by Congress leaders. Since 2010, they have reportedly acquired numerous properties across Bhopal, Kolkata, Patna, and Maharashtra,” Bhattacharya said.

He highlighted that on April 15, 2025, the ED filed a formal chargesheet against Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, deepening the legal troubles for the Congress party. "It is shocking to see that leaders who constantly speak of nationalism and democracy are involved in such grave financial misconduct,” he remarked.

According to Bhattacharya, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi own 76% shares in Young India, the company at the centre of the controversy. “They used this entity to acquire valuable assets originally owned by the National Herald, effectively diverting public wealth for private benefit. This is nothing short of looting,” he said.

The BJP is staging nationwide protests, including in Tripura, to denounce what Bhattacharya described as the moral and political bankruptcy of the Congress party. “The people deserve to know how their money was misused. We will continue to expose this betrayal,” he asserted.
