Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder has alleged that former Tripura Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Samir Ranjan Barman obstructed construction work of a covered drainage system in front of his residence, aimed at tackling monsoon-induced flooding in the city.
The AMC, along with the Public Works Department and Agartala Smart City Limited, has been executing a city-wide drive to build covered drains to curb waterlogging during the upcoming rainy season. According to Mayor Majumder, the civic body has set a deadline to complete the crucial infrastructure project by June-July.
“Work is progressing swiftly in most parts of Agartala, but in some locations, influential individuals are reportedly interfering with the project and preventing workers from doing their job,” said Majumder. “It is extremely unfortunate that former Chief Minister Samir Ranjan Barman allegedly stopped engineers and workers from continuing construction outside his residence. I am not aware of his reasons, but such actions will not be tolerated,” he asserted.
The Mayor warned that strict legal steps would be taken against anyone, regardless of their position, who attempts to derail public development works.
As of now, Barman has not issued any statement in response to the allegations. He is also the father of senior Congress MLA and former minister Sudip Roy Barman.
