In an inspiring triumph of determination over adversity, Romeo Hrangkhawl — a physically disabled student of Kamalachhara High School under Ambassa Sub-division in Tripura’s Dhalai District — has successfully cleared the Secondary Examination conducted by the Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) this year.
What makes Romeo’s achievement extraordinary is that he wrote all his exam papers using his feet.
Born with severe physical disabilities that prevent him from walking or using his hands, and with speech difficulties that make verbal communication challenging, Romeo’s journey to academic success has been anything but ordinary. Yet, against all odds, he appeared for his board exams with courage and grit — and passed.
As the results were declared, the usually quiet campus of Kamalachhara High School erupted in joy. Romeo, accompanied by his father Hariram Hrangkhawl, arrived at the school to check his result. The moment he saw his name on the list of successful candidates, his face lit up with sheer, uncontainable happiness. Teachers, classmates, and members of the local community gathered around him, offering heartfelt congratulations. The celebration wasn’t just about passing an exam — it was about the spirit of perseverance and hope that Romeo embodied.
Throughout his school years, Romeo remained committed to his education, attending classes regularly despite his physical limitations. He wrote all his exams with his foot, a feat that speaks volumes of his inner strength and willpower. His teachers, classmates, and even the school’s cook-cum-helpers stood by him every step of the way, offering assistance whenever needed — especially during midday meals and daily routines.
“We are overjoyed with Romeo’s success,” said Anjana Chakma, Headmistress of Kamalachhara High School. “He is a calm and obedient student. Since I joined as principal in 2022, I’ve witnessed how everyone — from faculty to fellow students — came together to support him. Romeo’s story inspires us all. We believe he has the potential to go far, and we will continue to support him however we can.”
Of the 22 students enrolled from the school for this year’s board exams, 21 appeared — Romeo among them — making his success all the more meaningful.
Romeo’s father, Hariram Hrangkhawl, was visibly moved. “I am very happy and proud of my son. I want to thank all the teachers and staff who supported him. Our family is not financially well-off, and Romeo faces many challenges every day — he cannot walk, he cannot speak properly, and he writes only with his leg. If the government can help support his higher studies, it would make a world of difference for us.”
Romeo’s story is more than just an academic success — it is a testament to resilience, community, and the power of human will. His achievement stands as a beacon of hope for many, reminding us that with the right support and unyielding spirit, no obstacle is insurmountable.
