Tipra Motha Party legislator Ranjit Debbarma on Thursday has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging the immediate formation of a High-Power Committee in Tripura to identify and deport illegal Bangladeshi nationals.
Citing rising infiltration through the porous Indo-Bangladesh border, Debbarma also demanded stringent legal measures, including fines, imprisonment, and subsequent deportation of unauthorized foreigners.
In his letter, Debbarma expressed concern over the increasing number of illegal entries, particularly in the Tripura sector, allegedly due to internal tensions in Bangladesh.
He criticized the Mobile Task Force (MTF) in the state for its ineffective response but praised the Government Railway Police (GRP) for their proactive role.
He highlighted a recent case where 23 Bangladeshi nationals were detained at Churaibari Police Station in North Tripura.
“The growing presence of unauthorized foreigners poses a grave threat to national security and sovereignty,” Debbarma stated, pointing to increased infiltration into tribal areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), including Chawmanu, Gandacharra, Karbook, and Shilacharri. He alleged that many infiltrators from the Chittagong Hill Tracts had established hamlets and entire villages, even acquiring government forest land through fraudulent means.
According to Debbarma, these individuals have obtained forged Indian identity documents such as Voter ID cards, Aadhaar, Ration cards, PAN cards, and passports. Some are reportedly running petrol pumps, ration shops, or working as skilled laborers like masons and carpenters.
Given the worsening situation in Bangladesh and the sensitive geopolitical climate, Debbarma called for urgent action. He proposed the formation of a High-Power Committee comprising the Administrative Secretary (Home), Secretary (Home), District Magistrates and Collectors, District Superintendents of Police, and the State Level Nodal Officer. This panel, he said, should be tasked with identifying and deporting illegal immigrants after imposing appropriate penalties.
Debbarma also recommended setting up check posts and camps within Indian territory, manned by personnel from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Tripura Police, Assam Rifles, and CRPF. He demanded the formation of a Special Mobile Task Force and a dedicated intelligence wing comprising local officers to monitor and prevent infiltration, detect forged documents, and prosecute brokers facilitating the process. Additionally, he urged for the deployment of intelligence teams at bus stands, railway stations, and airports across the state.
