Widespread protests erupted across Agartala on Tuesday following alleged derogatory remarks made by senior CPIM leader and former Member of Parliament Shankar Prasad Datta against Lord Hanuman during a recent party event.
Political and religious groups have demanded Datta's immediate arrest and public apology.
In a show of dissent, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) took out a rally in the heart of Agartala city, led by BJYM State President and MLA Sushanta Deb, BJP State Vice President Papia Datta, and other party workers.
The rally, which witnessed participation from over 100 supporters, called for strong action against the former MP.
Addressing reporters during the rally, MLA Sushanta Deb condemned the alleged comments.
“We observed that two days ago, Shankar Prasad Datta made derogatory remarks against Lord Hanuman.
The remarks have hurt religious sentiments, and not only the BJP but the entire state is protesting against this,” he said.
Deb further accused the CPIM of repeatedly attempting to undermine religious beliefs.
“Earlier, too, the CPIM has made such statements. From comparing religion to opium to controversial activities in West Bengal, they have consistently disrespected religious sentiments,” he alleged.
In a separate demonstration, Bajrang Dal activists staged a protest in front of the Radhanagar Bus Stand in Agartala.
Protesters placed a garland of shoes on an effigy of the former MP as a mark of strong disapproval. The group demanded that Datta issue a public apology—either in person or via video.
“We observed that two days ago, Shankar Prasad Datta made derogatory remarks against Lord Hanuman.
As of now, there has been no official response from Shankar Prasad Datta or the CPIM regarding the allegations.
