In a major blow to narcotics trafficking networks, Tripura Police on Wednesday seized over one lakh Yaba tablets worth approximately Rs 11 crore in two separate operations in Teliamura (Khowai District) and Agartala (West District).
As per Teliamura SDPO Panna Lal Sen, police personnel were conducting routine vehicle checks at the 41 Mile Naka Point when they intercepted a suspicious auto-rickshaw.
“Our team noticed a strong medicinal odour from the vehicle. Senior officials, including Khowai SP Randitya Das and the Deputy Collector & Magistrate, rushed to the spot. On detailed inspection, 10 large black packets were recovered, containing nearly one lakh Yaba tablets,” he said.
The estimated black market value of the consignment is around Rs 10 crore. Two individuals, Suman Majumder and Bikas Deb, were apprehended from the vehicle and are currently in custody. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway to determine the source and intended delivery point of the contraband.
In a parallel operation, a joint team of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Assam Rifles, and Tripura Police intercepted a cement-laden truck in Agartala’s Khayerpur area. On inspection, 30 packets of Yaba tablets were discovered concealed inside cement sacks. The driver fled the scene and remains at large. The value of the second haul is estimated at Rs 1 crore.
Both incidents underscore the increasing challenge of cross-border drug trafficking in Tripura. Authorities have intensified surveillance along inter-state and international borders as investigations continue.
