Tripura is set to witness a major upgrade in its fisheries infrastructure with the construction of a state-of-the-art fish market at Maharajganj, the largest marketplace in the state capital.
The project, with an estimated budget of Rs 35 crore, aims to modernize fish trading facilities and improve conditions for traders and consumers alike.
Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das announced the initiative during an inspection of the existing Maharajganj fish market on Wednesday.
He informed that the project is being spearheaded by the SC Welfare Department, as a large number of fish traders in the market belong to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community.
“The objective is to ensure a modern, hygienic, and well-organized fish market that addresses longstanding issues such as poor drainage and lack of cleanliness,” said Minister Das. “Rs 7 crore has already been sanctioned, and the project will include a G+2 (three-storey) structure with updated amenities.”
The new complex will tackle space constraints and sanitation issues that have plagued the current market for years, he added. Officials have completed initial surveys, and layout planning for the construction is underway.
Das also highlighted that this move is part of a broader push by the government to strengthen the state’s fish marketing system. “In addition to Maharajganj, we plan to establish apex fish-selling centres across Tripura. This will ensure that fish harvested from sources like the Dumbur reservoir are marketed locally, benefiting both producers and consumers,” he said.
