Mayor inspects city market, orders removal of illegal shops

Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumdar on Wednesday visited the Lake Chaumuhani Market in the heart of the city and ordered immediate removal of unauthorized temporary shops that have resurfaced despite prior eviction.

During the inspection, the Mayor noted that several traders, who had previously erected makeshift shops on government land in violation of civic regulations, have resumed business in the same manner after their earlier structures were demolished by the Corporation.

Addressing reporters, Mayor Majumdar said, “A section of people continues to occupy government land illegally and run businesses without any permission, which has led to growing public complaints. These encroachments are causing difficulties for both buyers and sellers.”

He warned that legal action will be taken against traders who fail to comply with the eviction orders. The Mayor reminded that this was not the first time such action was initiated, but some traders continue to defy municipal directives.

In a move aimed at long-term resolution, Majumdar announced that the Agartala Municipal Corporation will soon construct a temporary market shed at the site, which will accommodate around 125 to 130 traders.

“This initiative is meant to provide a systematic and fair space for all those who have been doing business here for a long time. Until the permanent market shed is ready, traders will be allowed to conduct their business from this temporary structure,” he said.

Mayor Majumdar appealed to all traders to cooperate with the Corporation’s efforts to restore order and improve the market infrastructure for the benefit of all stakeholders.
