In a major anti-drug operation, police from Amtali Police Station apprehended a suspected drug trafficker and seized a massive consignment of marijuana during a late-night naka checking on Friday late nigth.
According to police sources, the accused—identified as Prosenjit Debnath, a resident of Konaban under Madhupur Police Station—was transporting a large quantity of dried ganja in a pickup vehicle (TR 07 1834) along the Amtali bypass road, a route reportedly being frequently used by smugglers to evade law enforcement.
Acting on suspicion, Sub-Inspector Ranabrata Ghosh, along with police personnel and TSR jawans, intercepted the speeding vehicle at a naka point near Amtali. Upon searching the vehicle, officers recovered approximately 578 kilograms of dried ganja, packed in 17 separate packets.
The driver, Prosenjit Debnath, was immediately taken into custody. Police believe he is part of a larger network of traffickers operating in the region, exploiting the bypass road under the cover of darkness.
A case has been registered against the accused under the provisions of the NDPS Act, and intensive interrogation is currently underway to uncover further links in the smuggling network.
On Saturday, the accused was produced before the court and remanded to police custody for further investigation.
Authorities have indicated that surveillance and naka operations along the Amtali bypass will be intensified in the coming days to curb ongoing drug trafficking activities.
