Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Saturday strongly advocated for the implementation of ‘One Nation, One Election’, stating that it will empower voters, streamline the democratic process, and significantly reduce the wastage of resources.
Speaking at a discussion organised by the BJP Tripura Pradesh Legal Cell at Sukanta Academy in Agartala, Dr. Saha said that frequent elections disrupt developmental activities, drain financial resources, and adversely impact daily life.
“When elections are held repeatedly, it affects governance and developmental work. If One Nation, One Election is implemented, voters will be able to exercise their democratic rights in a more efficient and effective manner,” he said.
Highlighting the government’s commitment, Dr. Saha said, “To make the democratic process more citizen-friendly and development-oriented, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has introduced the One Nation, One Election Bill in Parliament.”
Referring to past reforms, Dr. Saha lauded PM Modi's leadership and determination. “Whether it was the abolition of Triple Talaq or the recent Waqf Amendment Act, PM Modi has shown that he doesn’t just make promises—he delivers. Critics had predicted unrest over Triple Talaq, but nothing of that sort happened. We have had two true leaders since independence—Atal Bihari Vajpayee and now, PM Modi. He is the only ‘himmatwala’ (courageous leader) in Indian politics today.”
Dr. Saha also criticized the misuse of Waqf provisions, alleging illegal occupation of government lands. “Many spoke about Waqf but did nothing. PM Modi took the bold step of amending the Act. Some people may try to politicize the issue, but these changes are essential for the country’s progress,” he said.
He further emphasized recent legal reforms introduced by the central government. “Three new criminal laws have come into effect. Now, anyone can register an FIR at any police station without any hassle.”
Citing global examples, Dr. Saha argued that if other countries can successfully implement synchronized elections, there’s no reason why India can’t. “By 2047, when we talk about Vikshit Bharat (Developed India), we envision a nation free from regressive traditions and corruption. The Opposition’s claims against this initiative are baseless and driven solely by political survival,” he added.
Dr. Saha also highlighted the logistical challenges of multiple elections. “A huge amount of time and money is spent every time we go to the polls. Regular administrative work, including education, suffers as large portions of manpower—especially from the education sector—are deployed for election duties. We must support the One Nation, One Election initiative for a stronger and more efficient democracy.”
