Tripura to begin paddy procurement from July 26, targets 14 lakh MT

In a major step toward ensuring fair returns for farmers, the Government of Tripura will begin direct procurement of Rabi season paddy at Minimum Support Price (MSP) from July 26.

This procurement drive is being jointly undertaken by the Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs and the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

A high-level video conference was held today at the Secretariat’s conference hall today to finalize preparations.

The meeting was chaired by Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath and Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury.

It was attended by Chairpersons and Vice-Chairpersons of various Panchayat Samitis, Sub-Divisional Administrators, Block Development Officers (BDOs), Deputy Directors of the Agriculture Department, agricultural supervisors, and officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department.

Officials said the meeting focused on ensuring a transparent and hassle-free procurement process across the state. The government has set an ambitious target of procuring over 14 lakh metric tonnes of paddy this season under the MSP scheme.

Speaking at the meeting, Minister Ratan Lal Nath reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of farmers. He stressed the importance of timely procurement and prompt payments to boost farmers' confidence.

Both ministers urged officials at all administrative levels to work in close coordination for the successful implementation of the procurement drive.

The initiative is expected to provide substantial financial relief to farmers, ensure fair market value for their produce, and contribute to agricultural sustainability in the state.
