Tribal families of South Tripura suffer without basic amenities, slam MDC

For the past seven years, around 27 tribal families in the Chankhala Bari area of Kailashnagar TTAADC Village under Rishyamukh block under South Dsitrict have been living in deplorable conditions due to the lack of drinking water, roads, and other basic amenities.

Their long-standing grievances have now erupted into open anger against the local Member of District Council (MDC) Debajit Tripura, who they allege has failed to deliver on promises made prior to the last elections.

Despite government claims of spending lakhs of rupees under various schemes to ensure clean drinking water reaches every household, the families here still rely on cisterns, drains, and pit wells to meet their daily water needs.

Residents said they have dug makeshift wells to store rainwater, but the water turns muddy and unfit for consumption during the rainy season. Financial hardship prevents many from purchasing water filters, forcing them to drink untreated water, which has led to a spike in water-borne diseases in the area.

"We are struggling every single day for basic necessities like clean drinking water. It feels like we have been abandoned," said one of the residents.

Villagers alleged that MDC Debajit Tripura had promised to stand by them and visit their homes regularly during the last ADC election campaign. “But after winning, he never returned. He doesn’t even inquire about our condition anymore,” another resident remarked.

With village council elections approaching, locals believe that once again political leaders like Debajit Tripura will reappear with promises and appeals for votes. However, this time, the villagers say they will not be misled.

“The decision has been made. You’ll see its result in the next election,” said a villager, reflecting a mood of political defiance sweeping through the hamlet.
