Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar on Sunday stressed the need for more forensic and scientific approaches in police investigations to enhance conviction rates and ensure timely justice for victims.
Speaking at a workshop on the implementation of newly introduced criminal laws, DGP Dhankar said, “The three new criminal laws enacted last year place great emphasis on completing the judicial process within a specified time frame. To achieve this, all departments — including the health department — must play a coordinated role in strengthening prosecution, trial, and conviction processes.”
He highlighted that the Tripura Police is actively working towards making investigations more scientific and evidence-driven. “Our aim is to dispose of the majority of cases within one year,” he said.
The DGP also pointed out the police’s significant progress in cracking down on narcotics-related crimes. “In the past 4 to 5 years, our performance in NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) cases has been commendable. We have already exceeded last year’s tablet seizure figures. In 2023, we seized around 18.06 lakh tablets, and this year, we have already crossed that mark,” he noted.
He further emphasised that merely registering cases is not enough.
“Prosecution, trial, and conviction must follow. This requires stronger coordination between investigation teams, prosecutors, medical officers, the Forensic Science Laboratory, and other stakeholders. It is a collective effort,” Dhankar added.
Reiterating the state police’s commitment to curbing drug abuse, the DGP concluded, “We are working towards achieving the goal of a Nasha Mukt Tripura (Drug-Free Tripura).”
