In a heartening nod to grassroots innovation and sustainable enterprise, bamboo jewellery crafted by women artisans of Tripura has captured national attention.
Lauded by NITI Aayog in a recent social media post, the initiative shines under the Aspirational Districts and Blocks Programme for its transformative impact on rural livelihoods and eco-conscious fashion.
Branded under the name Aakanksha, these elegant, eco-friendly ornaments are handcrafted by women-led Self Help Groups (SHGs), embodying a graceful confluence of tradition, sustainability, and empowerment.
NITI Aayog described the initiative as “Woven Elegance from the Forests of Tripura”, commending the SHG ‘Didis’ for turning locally sourced bamboo into contemporary jewellery that is both rooted in indigenous culture and aligned with modern tastes.
More than just adornments, each piece of bamboo jewellery is a symbol—of resilience, craftsmanship, and green innovation.
The initiative also echoes the spirit of the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign, promoting rural enterprise while championing environmentally responsible production.
Lightweight, biodegradable, and culturally vibrant, the jewellery has seen growing demand in both domestic and international markets, offering a promising future for artisans and their communities.
As these handcrafted pieces gain recognition, they continue to shape sustainable livelihoods across Tripura and showcase the region’s timeless artistic legacy to the world.
