Tripura BJP to elect new State President on June 29; poll schedule released

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura has formally announced the schedule for electing its next Pradesh President.

According to a notification issued on Friday, the election will take place on June 29, with the results to be declared the same day.

The process comes as part of the BJP’s internal democratic framework and in line with the party’s constitution and guidelines laid out by the Central Election Authority. The election will be overseen by State Returning Officer Samarendra Ch. Deb, who released the detailed notification on June 27.

The electoral proceedings began today with the publication of the list of the State Electoral College. On June 28, candidates will submit their nomination papers, which will be scrutinized on the same day.

The deadline for withdrawal of nominations is also set for June 28, following which the final list of candidates will be published.

“If polling is necessary, it will be held on June 29, followed by the counting of votes and declaration of results the same day,” the notification stated.

This election comes nearly two years after Rajib Bhattacharya was appointed as the Tripura BJP President on August 25, 2022. He succeeded Dr. Manik Saha, who had held the post since 2020 before becoming the Chief Minister of Tripura. Bhattacharya also currently serves as the state’s lone Rajya Sabha MP.

With the BJP focusing on strengthening its organizational machinery in the state, the upcoming election has sparked keen interest in political circles. Observers believe the new leadership will play a crucial role in shaping the party's strategy ahead of key electoral battles.
