Tripura has recorded a significant 34% decline in deaths caused by road traffic accidents this year, according to Superintendent of Traffic Kanta Jangir.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, SP Jangir said the traffic department has been carrying out a special enforcement drive since June 9 targeting various violations, including the use of non-standard or fake number plates, tampered plates, loud silencers, and violations of road permits.
“Today, the special drive was conducted across key locations in Agartala—North Gate, RMS Chowmuhani, Ashram Chowmuhani, AD Nagar, and Post Office Chowmuhani. So far, we have identified 635 non-standard number plates. Challans and notices have been issued accordingly, and 26 two-wheelers have been seized. Just today, 55 fake or non-standard number plates were detected and confiscated,” she said.
On the broader issue of road safety, SP Jangir said a survey has been conducted at black spots and accident-prone areas to identify the root causes of frequent mishaps.
“A detailed report will be submitted to the concerned department for further action. Checkpoints (nakas) have been increased across Agartala and other parts of the state. Interceptor vehicles are also being used, and special statewide drives are being carried out daily from 6 PM to 8 PM,” she added.
The intensified enforcement appears to be yielding results. “Compared to the same period last year, overall road traffic accidents have dropped by 11%, fatal accidents by 32%, and deaths by 34%,” SP Jangir informed.
The special drive will continue in the coming days, she said.
