BJP protests outside Congress MLA’s residence over remarks against indigenous people, demands apology

Tension flared in Agartala on Wednesday as over 100 indigenous members and leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest outside the official residence of Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman, demanding a public apology or his resignation over alleged derogatory remarks made against indigenous people.

The protest stemmed from Roy Barman’s recent speech during a public meeting in Ambassa, Dhalai district, where he allegedly accused BJP leaders of "urinating on indigenous people"—a remark that has triggered widespread anger within the indigenous community.

Condemning the comment, BJP General Secretary Bipin Debbarma said, “This protest is our response to the shameful and unparliamentary language used by Sudip Roy Barman in Ambassa. He has not only insulted the indigenous people of Tripura but also those across India. Our demand is straightforward—he must publicly apologise or step down from his post.”

Debbarma further warned that if their demands remain unaddressed, BJP’s indigenous workers would launch similar demonstrations across the state.

West Tripura Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar confirmed that the situation was under control, with adequate police deployment ensuring the dispersal of protestors without major incident.
