More than 100 autorickshaws and e-rickshaws were detained by Tripura Traffic Police on Friday during a special enforcement drive for allegedly violating restrictions on their entry and movement within Agartala city.

Tripura Traffic Police Superintendent Kanta Jangir said the restrictions were introduced to regulate the movement of autorickshaws and e-rickshaws in Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) areas and ease traffic congestion.

According to Jangir, vehicles operating from outside the AMC area are not allowed to enter and operate within Agartala city beyond the notified limits. Designated locations, including Radhanagar Bus Stand, Chandrapur Inter-State Bus Stand and Nagerjala Bus Stand, have been identified as permitted limits for such vehicles.

The Traffic Police said some autos continued to enter the city despite repeated instructions, leading to congestion and creating difficulties in managing traffic.

Jangir said certain exemptions have been kept in place for passengers travelling for urgent purposes, including students and patients.

The Traffic Police had earlier conducted awareness programmes and held meetings with auto-rickshaw unions. Notices were also issued to drivers informing them about the restrictions.

“Despite repeated awareness programmes, meetings with unions and issuance of notices, some autos are still violating the restrictions,” Jangir said.

She added that the detention of more than 100 vehicles was part of a special enforcement operation aimed at ensuring compliance with the notified rules.

The Traffic Police said such enforcement drives will continue in the coming days to prevent violations, reduce congestion and ensure smoother traffic movement across Agartala.
