The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has directed the Commissioner of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) to conduct an inquiry into allegations of harassment, verbal abuse and attempted manhandling of a couple by an Assistant Municipal Commissioner.
The complaint was lodged by Chayan Pal and his wife Supta Pal, residents of Geetanjali Apartment on H.G.B. Road in Agartala, against Swapnajit Sarkar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of AMC’s East Zone.
In their petition, the couple alleged that they were subjected to humiliation and harassment by the municipal official during the course of his official duties. They further alleged that abusive language was used against them and that there was an attempt to physically manhandle them.
After examining the complaint and the documents submitted along with it, the Commission, headed by Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh, decided to seek a formal report from the municipal authorities.
The THRC has forwarded a copy of the complaint to the AMC Commissioner and asked the civic body to conduct an inquiry into the allegations. The Commission has specifically sought a report on whether the conduct complained of amounted to any violation of the human rights of the petitioners.
The case will come up for further consideration on September 16, 2026. The AMC Commissioner has been directed to submit the inquiry report before the scheduled hearing.
