Tripura’s kidney transplant programme is set to achieve another milestone, with two more procedures scheduled at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital on October 5 and 6. With these operations, the total number of kidney transplants conducted at the state-run facility will rise to 11.
The Tripura Health Department, in a press release, said nine kidney transplant procedures have already been successfully performed at AGMC and GBP Hospital. The programme, initiated through the efforts of Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha, has enabled patients requiring renal transplantation to access the specialised treatment within the state.
The patients scheduled for transplantation on October 5 and 6 are aged 54 and 42 years, respectively. Specialist teams from AGMC and GBP Hospital, along with doctors from Shija Hospital and Research Institute, Manipur, will be involved in the procedures.
According to the Health Department, pre-transplant investigations and medical assessments of both recipients and donors are currently being carried out. The procedures will be undertaken only after all prescribed medical and legal requirements are fulfilled.
The department said approval from the concerned Authorisation Committee is mandatory before a kidney transplant can be conducted. Doctors also assess the medical compatibility between donors and recipients as part of the pre-transplant process.
Tripura conducted its first kidney transplant on July 8, 2024. The eighth and ninth procedures were subsequently completed on July 14 and 15, 2026.
The Health Department said the expansion of the transplant programme is expected to provide greater access to advanced renal care for patients in Tripura and reduce the necessity of travelling to other states for kidney transplantation.
