Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Sunday said that a pilot project for modernising border fencing is currently underway in Sepahijala district, while stressing the need for closer coordination between the Border Security Force (BSF) and the state government to address issues affecting border communities.

Speaking to reporters after attending a blood donation camp at the BSF Headquarters in Agartala, Saha said a formal coordination mechanism should be established to facilitate the exchange of information between the BSF, district administration, police and the state government.

“Already, a pilot study on modern fencing is being carried out in Sepahijala district. We need to understand the problems faced by people living along the border and maintain better coordination with the state government,” the Chief Minister said.

He said several developments and issues along the international border are known to the BSF but may not always reach the state government in time. Given Tripura's 856-km-long international border with Bangladesh, he said, an effective information-sharing mechanism was essential.

“I have suggested forming a coordination committee so that information can move from the district level to the state level. Matters related to the BSF can then be discussed with the concerned officers. The police will also be involved so that we can have a clearer picture of developments along the border,” Saha said.

The Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, said strengthening border security remained a priority and that the ongoing modern fencing initiative would help address existing gaps.

“We are working to strengthen the border. At present, there are three layers of security involving the BSF, Tripura State Rifles and Tripura Police. Better coordination and regular monitoring are necessary to identify gaps and address them effectively,” he said.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's emphasis on national security, Saha said there would be no compromise on security along the border.

“Border-related issues are longstanding. We are hopeful that the ongoing work will be completed soon and that the problems will be addressed,” he added.
