Tension gripped the premises of Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital on Sunday after the families and relatives of two tribal youths who died in a motorcycle accident refused to allow their post-mortem, demanding that the circumstances leading to the deaths be clarified first.

The deceased were identified as Sanjay Debbarma and Bishu Kumar Debbarma. The two youths died in a road accident on Saturday evening at Jaruilongbari, near the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s office on the Assam-Agartala National Highway under Teliamura police station.

Following the accident, questions arose among the families and local residents over the exact circumstances in which the motorcycle crashed. The issue led to tension at the hospital on Sunday morning when the families and a section of local residents gathered outside the morgue and opposed the post-mortem.

The situation was further aggravated by confusion surrounding a statement given by the Teliamura Sub-Divisional Police Officer to a section of the media. Some of those present initially assumed that the officer’s statement referred to Saturday’s accident.

Police later clarified that the statement was related to an earlier, separate accident in the same area. The proposed installation of a traffic naka point at the location was also connected to that earlier incident and had no direct relation to Saturday’s crash.

Despite the clarification, the families continued to demand a proper inquiry before the post-mortem. They wanted authorities to establish how the accident occurred and whether negligence or any other factor was involved.

The situation remained tense from around 10 am, prompting police personnel from Teliamura police station to remain deployed at the hospital. Officials held repeated discussions with the family members and tried to convince them to allow the post-mortem.

At around 2 pm, the concerned police officer, along with MDC Jiten Debbarma, reached the hospital and met the families and local residents. They assured them that the circumstances surrounding the accident would be investigated thoroughly and that appropriate action would be taken if any negligence or other irregularity was found.

Following the assurance, the family members finally agreed to the post-mortem. The bodies of Sanjay Debbarma and Bishu Kumar Debbarma were subsequently taken for examination.

The post-mortem report and the police investigation are now expected to establish the exact circumstances behind the fatal accident. For the families, however, questions remain over how the two youths lost their lives and whether the tragedy could have been prevented.
