Efforts to set up a state-of-the-art medical college in Jolaibari Assembly Constituency have gained momentum, as the Minority Welfare Department of the Government of Tripura advances the proposal under the Prime Minister’s Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK) with central support.
The initiative, part of a wider development push led by the Tribal Welfare and Minority Development Department under Minister and local MLA Shuklacharan Noatia, aims to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and educational opportunities in the region.
On Monday, a senior delegation conducted a detailed inspection of two shortlisted locations for the proposed institution. The team first examined land near the Deodaru Primary Health Centre in Jolaibari, followed by a visit to an old horticulture plantation area in Kalsi to evaluate its suitability for construction.
The review team included Minister Shuklacharan Noatia, BSC Chairman Ashok Moga, Minority Welfare Department Secretary Nirmal Adhikari, South Tripura District Magistrate Muhammad Sajjad P., IAS, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jyotirmoy Das, Sabroom Sub-Divisional Magistrate Tarun Kanti Sarkar, and Jolaibari Block Development Officer Nababrata Dutta, along with other officials.
Following the inspection, Minister Noatia stated that identifying and finalizing appropriate land at the earliest would be crucial for moving the project forward. He highlighted that the medical college would play a key role in improving healthcare access while also generating educational, employment, and economic opportunities in the region.
Officials and observers noted that such an institution in a rural setting could significantly enhance access to advanced medical services for nearby communities and contribute to the expansion of medical education infrastructure in South Tripura.
If approved and implemented, the project is expected to become a landmark development for the region, marking a major step in strengthening healthcare and overall socio-economic growth in Jolaibari. Local residents have also expressed hope that this long-anticipated initiative is steadily progressing toward realization.
