A woman was allegedly robbed of her gold chain by two youths while she was taking a morning walk in the Jogendranagar area, prompting East Agartala police to launch an investigation. One person has been arrested in connection with the incident, while efforts are underway to apprehend his alleged accomplice.
Police said the incident occurred when Geeta Rani Das went for a morning walk along with another woman. Two youths allegedly approached them and snatched the gold chain from Das’s neck before escaping on a motorcycle.
Acting on information gathered during the investigation, a team of East Agartala police traced the motorcycle allegedly used in the crime and intercepted it in the Radhanagar area. The rider was taken into custody.
The stolen gold chain, however, is yet to be recovered, police said.
The Officer-in-Charge of East Agartala Police Station said the second accused is reportedly from another district. A police team has already conducted a search operation in the area where he is believed to reside, but he could not be located. His mobile phone has also been found switched off.
Police said further efforts are being made to trace the absconding accused and recover the stolen jewellery.
The arrested person was produced before the court on Sunday, with police seeking seven days’ remand for further interrogation and investigation into the chain-snatching case.
