The fifth day of the Tripura Legislative Assembly’s Budget session commenced on Thursday in the absence of the principal opposition party, CPIM, which has decided to boycott the entire session.
The boycott comes after CPIM accused Speaker Biswabandhu Sen of of playing a partisan role and not adhering to Assembly rules and procedures.
The opposition party announced its decision on Wednesday, asserting that the Speaker’s conduct has compromised democratic functioning within the House.
Despite the CPIM’s absence, proceedings for the 2025-26 Budget session, which began on March 21, continued as scheduled.
The session is set to conclude on April 1, with key discussions on financial allocations and governance policies progressing without opposition participation.
Observers note that the CPIM’s decision to stay away from the Assembly raises concerns about the effectiveness of legislative debates in the absence of a strong opposition voice. However, the ruling party has maintained that the session will move forward as planned.
