The rehabilitated Bru families residing in the hilly areas have been facing a severe water shortage for the past six months.
With the water supply by tankers halted and electricity supply marred by low voltage and frequent load shedding, the residents have been struggling to meet their basic needs.
Frustrated by the prolonged crisis and administrative inaction, the affected residents resorted to a road blockade at West Kalajhari on the Amarpur-Gandachara road in between Gomati and Dhalai District early this morning.
Their primary demand was the immediate restoration of drinking water supply and electricity services.
As a result of the blockade, vehicular movement came to a standstill, causing immense inconvenience to daily commuters and travelers. Passengers were left stranded as traffic congestion worsened.
On receiving the news, senior officials of the district administration rushed to the spot and engaged in discussions with the protesters. The officials assured them of swift intervention to resolve the crisis. Following the assurances from the authorities, the protestors withdrew the blockade, allowing traffic to resume.
Despite repeated appeals to the administration over the past several months, the issues of water scarcity and inadequate electricity supply have remained unaddressed. The residents have expressed their disappointment over the lack of basic amenities and warned of more intense protests if immediate action is not taken.
