Senior Congress leader and former minister Sudip Roy Barman has strongly condemned the conduct of Tripura Assembly Speaker Biswabandhu Sen, blaming his alleged partisan actions for the opposition CPIM’s decision to boycott the remainder of the Budget session.
He urged Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to intervene and restore decorum in the House.
The Budget session for the financial year 2025-26, which began on March 21, is set to continue until April 1.
However, on Wednesday, the CPIM announced its withdrawal from the session, citing procedural violations and accusations of undue interference by the Speaker.
Roy Barman expressed deep concern over the situation, asserting that the Speaker’s actions were undermining democratic principles.
"The manner in which the Assembly is being run is alarming. The opposition is being stifled and humiliated, which is against the very spirit of parliamentary democracy. The Speaker's role should be neutral, but instead, we are witnessing the blatant misuse of power. This is sending a dangerous message to young legislators and setting an undemocratic precedent," he remarked.
He further criticized the ruling party’s approach, stating that passing the Budget without the participation of the principal opposition party is an unacceptable deviation from democratic norms.
"A one-sided Budget session is a mockery of governance. The government must recognize that this situation is damaging its credibility. I urge Chief Minister Manik Saha to intervene and ensure that the Assembly functions in a manner befitting a democratic institution,” Roy Barman added.
With the CPIM’s boycott escalating political tensions, all eyes are now on the state government’s next move in addressing the crisis.
