Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Monday announced that the state’s conviction rate has increased significantly over the past three years.
To further strengthen the legal framework and ensure the effective execution of three newly enacted criminal laws, the state government has decided to establish Deputy Director of Prosecution offices in all eight districts.
Speaking on the second day of the Tripura Budget session, Dr. Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, responded to a question from Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy regarding conviction rates in criminal cases.
He revealed that the number of criminal cases registered in the state stood at 4,532 in 2022, rising to 5,002 in 2023 before declining to 4,033 in 2024. Among these, charge sheets were filed in 3,548 cases, while 892 cases were closed with a final report. A total of 650 convictions were recorded, leading to the sentencing of 1,596 offenders over the three-year period.
"The conviction rate has increased by 20% in 2024 compared to 2022 and by 21% compared to 2023," Dr. Saha stated. He highlighted the introduction of three new criminal laws—the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)—which aim to strengthen the prosecution process. A high-level meeting was recently held in Guwahati, chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, where Tripura-specific concerns related to the implementation of these laws were discussed.
To facilitate the new legal framework, Dr. Saha announced that the government will set up Deputy Director of Prosecution offices in all eight districts. Additionally, around 70 new positions—including Deputy Directors, Assistant Directors, and Superintendent Officers—have been created to enhance the efficiency of the prosecution system.
